Golden Horn, winner of the best race in the world

04 October 2015

Best race in the world, the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe (Gr.1) crowned on Sunday 4 October 2015 GOLDEN HORN, a son of Cape Cross ridden to perfection by the star Frankie Dettori.

« The quality of Golden Horn was undeniable, but one question remained before the race : would Golden Horn follow in the footsteps of Sea the Stars (Cape Cross), winner of the Arc, or in the footsteps of Authorized (Mountjeu), which failed at Longchamp? (…) Trainer John Gosden was full of praise on his champion : « He is the best horse over intermediate distances that I have trained. He is a horse who is mentally and physically extraordinary. He had only missed out on one race, the “King George”, because of the rain the night before. I was thinking that we would find a softer ground today but that was not the case. The ground was perfect and the field was composed of some magnificent horses. Golden Horn has improved  since the beginning of the year. I think he is like Frankie [Dettori, ndlr] : he gets better with age! ».

The incredible champion Trêve, who was attempting an unprecedented treble in the Arc de Triomphe, finished in fourth place. « To say that this 94th Qatar Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1) was unique is an euphemism. The attempt of a treble by Trêve has made a true historical occasion. The tears which flowed or appeared after the race, on many faces, reflected the popular commitment to the champion. The crowd was supporting her cause – and rightly so. When Trêve did not produce the expected gear shift, hoped and desired, the crowd fell silent. And that counts when Longchamp brings together more than 58,000 people (the record of our century).
As for Christiane Head-Maarek, she never tried to look for (and find) any excuses for her trainee. During the press conference, she paid tribute to the superiority of the winner. « It's always disappointing when you are beaten because you come to win. But I watched the race and I have to say Lanfranco Dettori rode the race incredibly with Golden Horn. Golden Horn jumped into the route of the leader and well done to his jockey. Races are like that. You make decisions in a millisecond. Without the leader, Golden Horn would have been in front and would probably have won in the same way. Today, when Trêve left the starting stalls, she was a litte bit more « weak » than usual. The Prix de Vermeille, which she won easily, was certainly harder than we thought and has certainly taken away some impulses. Nevertheless she gave a good performance, there is nothing more to say. It must be added that she was beaten by a very good horse, the best 3 year old of her generation. Flintshire had a fantastic race. And New Bay is also a great horse. The record of two victories of the Arc will be beaten one day. We know the mare, she is very, very good, she has an outstanding turn of foot. Today, she was slower, we must not look for excuses. She was beaten by a better horse. That does not retract from her quality or what she has achieved so far. She deserves to go to the stud. I hope that she will go to one of the best stallions on the planet and that I might have the opportunity to train her offsprings. We will now try to find other horses like Trêve. It is fantastic to have had so many people support Trêve and I invite them to come back even if Trêve will not be there anymore».
